Ever wonder what makes a perfect winter engagement session outfit? Well this winter I’ve seen quite a few great outfits with all the shoots I’ve done! There’s a few tips I send my couples before their session, so in addition to the sharing the tips, I thought I’d share a few of the amazing outfits my couples end up wearing.
First off these are just my recommendations and by no means do you have to wear what I suggest. I just find that this is what I love photographing and what looks amazing in photos!
Above all would be comfort…not meaning yoga pants (I know, bummer). Comfort in the way that if you hate wearing dresses, don’t wear one. Just because I love them in photos doesn’t mean you have to wear one. Wear things that you feel like yourself in. If that means suit and fancy dress, cool! If that means jeans boots and plaid, cool! This photo of Baili and Brett for example, how comfy and relaxed do they look? Baili said she is NOT a dress girl, so I loved that she wore stuff she was comfy in but also looks amazing!
Or this stunning photo of Will and Kassidy! She loves to get dressed up so this made perfect sense!
Coordinate not match
Long gone are the days of wearing matching outfits. That’s why I say coordinate instead. No clashing patterns, not you in a long sleeve and your fiancé in a tank, not two bright different colors. Think same color family, and using colors that complement and support each other. You get me? All the outfits in this post are great examples of coordinating!
When thinking about colors and patterns think first of the season and location. I find that natural earthy colors and tones go with every season and location, and natural colors never go out of style. You wouldn’t wear a lime green shirt in fall, or a bold patterned red shirt in a field of wildflowers. So if you do go for a pop of color, just try to make it make sense, like this! Gabe rocking his muted coral pants along with other neutral colors, which makes it look natural and fun, nothing too crazy!
Hanna looking warm in a sweater and Nate wearing layers. Notice how well the colors go with the location!!
I think this is the easiest way to elevate your look. Adding a vest, cardigan, or jacket just adds something. Plus you can alternate with layers on and off for even more of a variety in your gallery. This photo of Amalia and Simon has great use of layers that incorporate solid colors, texture, pattern and warmth…which is another bonus to having layers in winter haha.
Often overlooked but you can have a lot of fun with this and things like scarves and hats can also add variety! And if you’re a hat or scarf person, winter is the best season to have your engagement session cause you can wear all the warm things!
Ok so there might be a dance party, running, jumping, and the likes during your engagement session. Try to find dresses, shirts, and cardigans that can have great movement. If you’re brave enough to wear a dress in winter, it looks AMAZING! Here’s Catie looking stunning with a high slit and floral pattern! And right below is Leanna rocking a jumpsuit + flowy cardigan outfit!
Ok this might not sound like a legit tip but trust me, it is. This will help battle the cold and in my opinion it looks so cute and cozy! Bring your favorite blanket and get ready to cuddle up!
I hope some this winter engagement outfit post will help you get an idea of what to look for when picking out your outfits! I find that Pinterest is like the best way to gather inspiration, and you can even check out my winter engagement outfit board! And if you need help narrowing down outfits, I can always help!
