The wedding morning started as usual. City brew for a cinnamon scone and grande americano. I picked up Ashley who I met last spring as she was second shooting with me, yay. The weather was around 15 degrees that morning if I recall correctly. I don’t do many Montana winter weddings, but when I do there’s a lot of hats and layers.
We showed up where the girls were getting ready. Fruit and scones were laid out for everyone, a long mirror set up on the table for the bridesmaids to do makeup. Adria sat down to have her hair done and her sister Airika did her makeup. Her mom steamed her dress and veil while everyone got ready as they jammed to some music. Adria put on her lipstick and slipped into her stunning Willowby gown. Her ribbons were tied and she put on her grandmothers pearl necklace and earrings.
Once we arrived to Connors parents place I took him to the first look location. Well not quite, as the spot I had in mind had a foot of snow and he had on dress shoes. I set him up on the road where chances of cold feet were a bit less (see what I did there?) I asked him how he was and he said he’d been sick all morning. He was nervous and excited. Adria in her braveness approached without a coat and he was holding in tears while she gave him a squeeze from behind. As I edited the sequence it was clear that as he turned he didn’t even look at her before losing it and going in for a hug. After a few moments of tears and hugs he checked her out, and I think he liked her get-up.
Meanwhile inside the garage family and bridal party were trying to stay warm. My fingers were burning at this point and I thankfully had on muck boots so at the very least my toes were ok. We did all the family and bridal party photos right after the first look. I’m super proud of everyone for freezing their butts off out there, and they looked incredible. The guys had flasks and were the some of the funnest groomsmen I’ve ever shot with. I was so excited to see these bridesmaid dresses ever since I heard about them. Velvet green…aren’t they stunning? 😍 most gorgeous group of girls ever and!
I took solo shots of Connor and Adria next. Connors just so fun to hang out with, and can we just talk about Adria’s style for a moment? First off this jacket is everything. A gift from Airika and my goodness besides the obvious of it being practical in the cold it is amazing! Continuing with the green theme her bouquet screams winter. She played with her dress in that amazing 12 o’clock light. Her dress…she showed me a photo after she bought it and I was in love. This dress has all the right things: velvet ribbon, big floral print, titanium color, and sheer pieces. I would see this dress scrolling through my Instagram feed and could not wait to photograph it. Adria is undeniably a stunning bride. #goals
Everyone headed to the church, where Adria pinned on her grandpas boutonnière as the family and bridal party stayed in a back room. Guests were seated and a beautiful ceremony commenced. Vows were said and rings were exchanged. Then the song “Can’t Help Falling in Love With You” played then boom, they were announced as husband and wife and with an epic kiss it was a done deal.
There was a good break in between the ceremony and reception so we stopped by Butte Brewing Company for a beer before portraits, it also happened to be a place they had worked together. It was almost golden hour and the warm winter light was just right as we headed up behind the M hill. They cuddled up, danced in the snow, and watched the last light set on Butte.
Later on at the reception it was time for the first dance. They met on the dance floor and then heard a bagpipe. I had known about it for about 15 minutes from Connor’s mom. In come the drummer and bagpipe and everyone loved it. They listened to a song and danced a little before their first dance. Then the sweetest father daughter dance took place and a mother son dance turned epic. The dance floor was what you’d call lit. Boy it was so fun to watch, then at one point someone started chanting Connor’s name. I wasn’t sure what was going on but I made it through the crowd and to everyone’s delight he gave them what they wanted, Irish dancing. His sister Kasey joined in too! After getting more dancing shots and a good beer mess on the dance floor, I said my goodbyes.
This wedding is one of my all time favorites. Reasons: how much fun these two are and how much I’ve been able to hang out with them prior to the wedding. And the green details of course, no detail is too small and Adria has excellent taste. Winter weddings are amazing. And it was my first butte wedding and it makes me even more excited for the few weddings I have here next year!
I hope you all enjoy these photos! Also PSA to everyone… more Montana winter weddings please!
