Want to know what the perfect moody Montana Fall wedding looks like? This. This is what it looks like. Groom wearing white, gloomy weather, ombré bouquet, intimate ceremony, warm tones, all of it.
I’m obsessing over the detail shots among the fallen leaves on the rain soaked porch. I’ve always struggled with detail shots, but this past year I feel like I’ve done pretty well styling them! Plus my brides are amazing with having so many details, I mean check out Haley’s for instance. Her bouquet was everything. The warm tones, the textures, the ribbons. Whenever I get to shoot Katie’s gorgeous flowers it’s a good day. Haley works with her parents who own GreenLeafs Jewelry in Billings, so that explains her stunning custom ring.
Haley and Kole had a first look, so we headed out to the field for that, and seriously the rain on the grass and heavy clouds were everything. Love me some wide open fields and evergreens. The white they both wore paired with the muted fall colors complemented each other so well. Kole looked so sharp, and Haley is such a stunner, together they are the obviously perfection.
Rather than trying to explain the florals myself, I had Katie give us her amazing expertise. Katie the owner and lead designer at Mac’s Floral said:
“Because we are a studio florist we tend to work more off color palette and tone with a few floral preferences kept in mind. Haley was the perfect client for that approach – she wanted a muted palette with a nod to modern bohemian design. The photographer’s style plays a big part in this! When I know the client is drawn to a moody esthetic but has a photographer with an over-exposed bright style, they aren’t going to achieve the look they want as easily. This comes into play during consults more than clients or vendors realize! Haley’s aesthetic paired with Macy’s style perfectly and then the major leg work was done. Starting with a muted blush/ mauve palette Haley switched gears at the 30 day meeting asking for more rusty/soft orange tones and we were happy to oblige. (inspiration palettes attached below). This meant coordinating the linen choices, overall aesthetic, venue décor and more when selecting our blooms. The mauve tone would still play a part but need to be complimented with the new palette.
Haley also chose my FAVORITE time of year to bet married. Fall weddings are some of my favorite especially in Montana when the local growers are in full swing. Most of Haley’s bouquet was sourced out of Belgrade, MT with the help of my favorite flower farmers. Flowers grown in our climate tend to hold better, have less carbon footprint and support our local economy! Haley’s bouquet was comprised of local dahlias, zinnias, dried bunny tail grass, scabiosa, lisianthus, bronze amaranthus, chocolate queen ann’s lace & supplemented by our imported roses, sea urchin fern, and eleagnus. An ombre approach was given to Haley’s bouquet so each color tone would have it’s moment and blend well into the scenery and landscape in a natural way.”
It’s best to hear the vision and execution straight from the source!
I showed up to the ceremony space, and my excitement for the day only grew. It was beautiful. The circle arch, florals, white wooden chairs (often overlooked, but seriously chairs can elevate the whole aesthetic) the tent with seating and bar, it was stunning. The clouds lingered as all found a seat. There in the rolling hills they promised their love and future and shared a kiss. Afterwards everyone visited under the tent, drinks in hand. I loved how relaxing it was for everyone, just family and friends hanging out before heading to the reception.
The celebration continued at the Petroleum Club in downtown Billings. I love this space, I feel like the building’s layout gives a good flow and separation of things, and you can’t beat the view. More folks attended the reception, and honestly I really like that. Gives everyone a chance to come to your wedding, but you don’t have to say your vows in front of hundreds of people.
Can we talk about the head table for a sec? I mean everything was stunning, but wow! Incredible backdrop with two big floral pieces, warm tones continued, and all the little candles and flower pots. Katie also went to town with the flowers on the cake, loved how different and exciting it is. Kole’s mom baked all the cakes with all the delicious flavors, how amazing is she?! I stayed late for the dancing, as everyone clearly was having the best time, I love a good party!
Haley and Kole, thank you for trusting me with your beautiful day, it was a pleasure to be there.
